Rachel Furness joins Newcastle United
Rachel Furness announces her arrival to Newcastle United, experiencing St. James Park as a player for the first time.
Newcastle United Women have announced the signing of experienced Northern Ireland international Rachel Furness on a permanent deal.
Furness joins the Magpies as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of their upcoming FA Women's Championship campaign. The midfielder arrives with a wealth of experience, having earned over 90 caps for Northern Ireland as well as featuring in 100 WSL matches.
The move to St. James Park reconnects Furness with her roots, having been born in the North East and started her career at the Club. After leaving Newcastle United in 2010, she has enjoyed successful spells at Sunderland, Reading, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. Most recently, she played for Bristol City in the Women’s Super League, after helping the team secure promotion in 2022/23.
At international level, Furness remains Northern Ireland’s record goalscorer - male or female - and played a pivotal role in their historic qualification for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 tournament.
The 35-year-old’s return comes at an exciting time for the Club, on the back of two consecutive promotions. with Newcastle also the first team to adopt a full-time professional model in Tier 3 ahead of the 2023/24 season. Furness brings leadership and a goal-scoring threat from midfield, with an impressive track record across her club career.
Reflecting on her return, Furness expressed her excitement: "To sign for a club I have supported my whole life - coming back home to the North East - is a very proud moment for me. Anyone that knows me knows I bleed black and white. I have watched from afar over the years and the ambitions of the club on and off the pitch are something I can't wait to be a part of. I'm excited to meet the team and bring my experience to an already very talented squad."
