Lucy Quinn signs with Birmingham City

Birmingham City Ladies today confirmed the signing of former Yeovil Town striker Lucy Quinn on a full-time contract for the 2017/18 WSL1 season.

Following several seasons with Portsmouth Ladies in the WPL, the 23-year-old made the step up to the WSL2 in July 2016, scoring four goals in the Lady Glover’s final five games to help the team secure the WSL2 league title. Quinn continued this form into 2017, where she scored against Notts County in the SSE Women’s FA Cup, as well as Arsenal and Manchester City in the WSL1 Spring Series.

This represents Quinn’s first step into a full-time league setup, and builds on her recent experience in Taipei in August 2017. Under the management of the FA’s Lydia Bedford, the striker represented Great Britain in the World University Games, also finishing as the tournament’s Golden Boot winner (6 goals).

Earlier in the summer, the new signing earned further accolades, winning the European Beach Football Championships with the sport’s England WNT, managed by Perry Northeast. In addition, as England’s starting goalkeeper, Quinn also received the Golden Glove award for the best Goalkeeper of the tournament.

Birmingham revealed their new signing today (Friday), with Manager Marc Skinner saying “I am really excited to welcome Lucy to the Birmingham City Ladies family.

“When she played against Birmingham last season she was a constant danger and a player that we regarded as a real threat to our defence. She possesses raw physical speed and power that ensure’s she is a handful for every defender. Lucy has proven she can score goals in WSL 1 and her ability to play centrally or wide gives the team many more quality attacking options.

“I know Lucy will become a fans favourite, with her fearless energetic displays and her hunger to score goals for our team.”

Speaking about the fresh opportunity, Birmingham’s newest signing said: “I’ve had an incredible summer, and am delighted to have topped it off by signing my first professional contract at Birmingham City Ladies.

“I am really excited to develop as a player and person in such an ambitious and welcoming environment. Thank you to Marc and everyone at the club, I can’t wait to get started.”

Earlier in the summer, Quinn represented England at the European Beach Football Championship in Nazare, Portugal. While the team defeated Switzerland 4–3 in the final to take the Gold, Quinn was also presented the Golden Glove award.

A recent graduate of Chichester University, Quinn began her career at the Hampshire Centre of Excellence in Southampton, before moving to Portsmouth Ladies to play senior football. After scoring 20, 14 and 11 goals in consecutive seasons in the FA Women’s Premier League, Quinn then took the opportunity to join Yeovil Town Ladies, overcoming the distance involved.

Alongside her footballing career, Lucy has passed her second-level diploma in Personal Training, and has previously worked part-time around her university studies and football.

Founder of ignite Talent, Ashley Brown added “I’m extremely pleased that Lucy has found a full-time setup that will allow her to continue her impressive development. The combination of playing style, culture and ambition made Birmingham a really strong fit for Lucy — and she will now have the opportunity to push herself day-in, day-out against some of England’s strongest strikers. After living some fantastic experiences over the summer, it’s exciting to see Lucy’s hunger to get back out on the pitch and work hard to unlock her full potential.”
